Tughlaq Shah was a great-grandson of Firuz Shah Tughlaq, whom the sultan had se-lected as the heir apparent in 1376. This was contested by one of the surviving sons, leading to a sharp factional tussle at the court. Even-tually, Tughlaq Shah did ascend the throne with the title Sultan Ghiyas al-Din II Tughlaq Shah in 1388. But, five months later (Feb-ruary 1389), he was killed in a rising by na'ib-wazir Rukn al-Din Jund, who placed Abu Bakr, a grandson of Firuz Shah, on the throne.
